Synopsis: Ghoulies. Ghosties. Long-legged beasties. Things that go bump in the night…
The Price family has spent generations studying the monsters of the world, working to protect them from humanity—and humanity from them.
Enter Verity Price. Despite being trained from birth as a cryptozoologist, she’d rather dance a tango than tangle with a demon, and is spending a year in Manhattan while she pursues her career in professional ballroom dance. Sounds pretty simple, right?
It would be, if it weren’t for the talking mice, the telepathic mathematicians, the asbestos supermodels, and the trained monster-hunter sent by the Price family’s old enemies, the Covenant of St. George. When a Price girl meets a Covenant boy, high stakes, high heels, and a lot of collateral damage are almost guaranteed.
To complicate matters further, local cryptids are disappearing, strange lizard-men are appearing in the sewers, and someone’s spreading rumors about a dragon sleeping underneath the city…
Cryptid, noun: Any creature whose existence has not yet been proven by science. See also “Monster.”
Crytozoologist, noun: Any person who thinks hunting for cryptids is a good idea. See also “idiot.”
I chose the InCryptid series to begin next in my Seanan McGuire READ ALL THE THINGS journey, as I mentioned after finishing Rise in the Newsflesh series. I’m normally not the biggest fan of fae, even though I’m sure McGuire’s October Daye will be different from anything I’ve read before. I am, however, a massive fan of weird creatures! Needless to say, this series was yelling at me to hurry up & read it!
The eighth book has just been released, so I’ve got some catching up to do. It’s quite exciting, actually. I mean.. it’s always a bloody fun romp when tucking into a Seanan McGuire/Mira Grant book! I take great comfort in knowing there is a long, adventurous journey ahead of me!
“.. it’s borderline impossible to fit a thigh holster under a micro-mini. I made up for my shameful modesty with a blood-red velvet bustier that looked appropriately scandalous–and better yet, had steel corsetry boning and gave me room for five strategically placed throwing knives. Between those, the steel tips on my heels, and the perfume bottle of holy water in my purse, I was loaded for bear. More accurately, I was loaded for ghoul.”
Discount Armageddon is about a family of Cryptozoologists, which is a pseudoscience. It’s the study of animals that are rumored to have existed/currently exist, but have yet to be proven by science. These hidden animals are called cryptids. Bigfoot, Kraken, Chupacabra, Yeti, the Loch Ness monster, etc. The Price family have dedicated their lives to studying & protecting these animals.
This particular installment focuses on Verity Price. She has moved across the country to follow a different passion, ballroom dancing. She also works at a cryptozoological conservation & as a cocktail waitress at a strip club. However, cryptids begin disappearing throughout the city & she must return to her old ways to find out what is happening & who the mysterious Covenant agent is.
This could have easily been one of those “She breasted boobily to the stairs, and titted downwards” books in the hands of another writer (I’m sure the cover doesn’t help some with having that judgement unfairly placed upon it. Admittedly, I adore pulpy covers!) BUT FEAR NOT! This is McGuire we are talking about & it kicked so much ass!
It’s clear that McGuire loves Buffy, that much is obvious! Those that follow her on social media will already know this. Over the many years that I’ve been following her, she has mentioned that she used to write Buffy fanfic. As someone who wrote their fair share of Buffy (I shipped Buffy & Faith SO HARD)/Xena/X-Files fanfiction back in the day, this delighted me! Fanfic often gets shit on, so to see her transition from fanfic to published author is just like.. the biggest middle finger to those who say it’s trash or real writers would never write such & such. I haven’t written or read fanfic in well over a decade, but it’s something that helped me feel.. less judged growing up. My sexuality, my weird sense of humor, how I never truly felt like I fit in. The fanfiction community is a passionate one, for sure!
Oh look, I’m word vomiting again! What else is new? Anyway. All that to say, this has a similar feel to the Buffy ‘verse. Like Buffy meets Supernatural meets The Women of the Otherworld with a touch of The Addams Family. I’m fascinated by the worldbuilding (something McGuire always does well in everything she puts out) & cannot wait to read more within this setting. I mean.. talking mice & boogeymen & wolf-bears & ghouls & motherfucking DRAGONS!!! YES-PLEASE-MAY-I-HAVE-SOME-MORE?!? Especially the Aeslin mice. Oh, how they made me laugh!
Discount Armageddon is wacky & silly & truly a breath of fresh air. It’s rad to focus on Cryptozoologists. I can’t think of any other series that does. I have always been fascinated by the weird creatures in mythology & folklore. It’s no secret that the Monster of the Week episodes in various shows (most notably X-Files & Buffy) are some of my very favorites!
The world of urban fantasy is a bit of a blind spot for me. But I’ve been branching out more & more & I’m finding that I dig the hell out of it!
Discount Armageddon is fast-paced, funny & thoroughly entertaining!
