Octavia E. Butler

“Choose your leaders with wisdom and forethought. To be led by a coward is to be controlled by all that the coward fears. To be led by a fool is to be led by the opportunists who control the fool. To be led by a thief is to offer up your most precious treasures to be stolen. To be led by a liar is to ask to be lied to. To be led by a tyrant is to sell yourself and those you love into slavery.”

Do you know who people don’t talk about nearly enough in Book Blogger Land™? Octavia E. Butler, that’s who!

OEB is one of my favorite writers & her Patternmaster series is just EVERYTHING! It was well ahead of its time. Entertaining, intense, weird, intelligent, powerful.. just fucking bonkers in the best damn way!

During a time when white males dominated science fiction, in walked a young Black woman who wrote about racism, sexism & power struggles between social classes. She wrote such visionary, thought-provoking, gorgeous prose. She is often touted as one of the best science fiction writers, however, it is hard to place her into just one particular box. Speculative fiction may be the closest one, because she truly encompasses so many different genres. Needless to say, she was insanely badass!

Stephen King helped me realize I wanted to be a writer, but Octavia E. Butler taught me how I wanted to write. I will forever love her words & stories đź–¤

You’re so metal baby & you don’t even know it!

I mean.. The Exorcist is pretty fucking metal, no? A girl possessed by a demon who spider walks down the stairs & projectile vomits all over a priest, while hurling vicious profanity at anyone & everyone. Continue reading “You’re so metal baby & you don’t even know it!”

A transcendent story of first loves and first songs, High School captures the tangle of discordant and parallel memories of two sisters who grew up in distinct ways even as they lived just down the hall from each another.
